DA: Teen Charged with Manslaughter Still Displaying ‘Reckless Driving Behavior’

The driver accused of killing Auburn announcer Rod Bramblett and his wife Paula on May 25 has racked up additional traffic offenses since then.

In court documents made public on Friday, Lee County District Attorney Brandon Hughes said 16-year-old Johnston Edward Taylor received two speeding tickets and one reckless driving citation.

Taylor was driving at 89 miles per hour, reportedly under the influence of marijuana and still accelerating when he rammed into the Bramblett’s vehicle from behind.

Hughes said Taylor was cited on November 24 for driving 68 mph in a 45-mph zone on South College Street and police saw him accelerating rapidly.

The next day, he was cited for speeding and reckless driving after he was seen driving 62 mph on Annaleu Drive where the speed limit is 35 mph.

He was also observed fishtailing into oncoming traffic and spinning tires. During the traffic stop, the officer reportedly smelled marijuana in the vehicle and found small pieces of marijuana.

According to police, Taylor told the officers he had hit a cat and he was trying to remove it from the undercarriage.

It was a little after 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, when the Brambletts were struck.

Taylor was heading south in the outside lane on Shug Jordan Parkway. The couple had stopped in that lane at a traffic light when Taylor struck their SUV to the right of center.

Paula Bramblett, 53, suffered multiple internal injuries. She was pronounced dead in the emergency room at East Alabama medical center.

Meanwhile, her 52-year-old husband who was driving died from a closed head injury.

Taylor was arrested in July and later released on $50,000 bond.

The District Attorney wants Taylor’s bond revoked because of the recent tickets. A judge is yet to rule.
